Make a Miniature Suitcase Accessory Tutorial

This weeks it's all about travel!

Let's make a mini suitcase for your elf. I chose to concentrate on a 'prop' suitcase; one that doesn't open BUT at the end there is a couple of pictures to show you can also easily make one that does open.

Let's get started!

You'll need:

A box/container/item that is rectangular in shape that looks 'suitcasy' - I chose a tic tac container as it's a good size for elves.
Hot Glue Gun - or craft glue though it will take longer to dry
Sticky tape
ribbon
paper to cover
marker pen
scissors

Step 1

Cut paper so that it will wrap around the Container and cover it - much like wrapping a parcel

use the sticky tape to hold it in place then glue the 'flap down.

I like to make sure my 'join' is at the top of the container. This helps to give the suitcase illusion.

Step 2

Fold in your sides like a parcel - being sure they don't overlap.  you want them to stay on the side only and not show on the front.

Step 3

Cut some ribbon for so that it wraps around the box as shown - leave a little 'flap' on one end so that it looks like the bag can be opened and has been strapped shut.

Step 4

(I forgot to take a picture of the 'doing bit)...but you cut a small bit of ribbon to use as the handle and glue to the top - allow enough room for your elves hand to fit under.

Step 5

If you want to add some extra detail you can grab your market and drawer corners on the suitcase

Once you've made one...you won't be able to stop - let your imagination run wild!!

Cover in leather and add some wire details

don't have ribbon? don't worry a marker makes a great fix

String in a great stand in too!

If you want a suitcase that opens I suggest getting hold of a hinged tin - often you can find them in the supermarket with mints in them.

I covered this one with fabric and ribbon to make ties - paper would work too or paints :-)

Cute Balloon Scene Setter for your Shelf Elf

I've wanted to create a series of easy tutorials that will produce fun scene setter items for your shelf elf for so long...and I've finally gotten motivation (and found some time) to get started!

All the tutorials will include items that are found in most homes..and if they aren't they are VERY easy (and inexpensive) to source.

So let's kick things off with a Super Cute Balloon accessory.

I'll keep things concise - but if you have any questions please either comment below or drop me a line at elfaccessoriesaustralia@gmail.com

What you'll need:

Water Balloons
Large Paper Clips - I prefer the coloured variety as they look more 'string' like
Long- nose pliers

Step 1:

Blow your balloons up - be prepared they get a little 'staticy'

Step 2:

Straighten out your paperclips

Don't worry if they're not exactly straight - it gives a better string like illusion.

Step 3:

Grab your pliers and approx 1cm down from one end of your straight paper clip give it a twist - don't close it yet though - you just want to create a small 'hook'

Step 4:

pop the now hooked paper clip around the end of the balloon - under the knot as it's the most secure.

Step 5:

Once you've got it hooked around - get your pliers ad give the hook a pinch to close it and secure around the base of the knot (this is the most fiddly bit). be careful not to squeeze the balloon as it might pop

Step 6:

Once the paper clip is secured you place your pliers on the wire and bend it so that you form a sort of '7' shape - this will support the balloon in an upright position and stop it flopping around.

Step 7:

Repeat step 3-6 as many times as you want to create your balloons :-)

Step 8:

Have fun setting up your elf in all sorts of balloon antics!
